As we are easing into the RV hobby, this road trip was for a two week adventure. We started with a trip to Virginia Beach and stayed at the KOA for 3 nights. September is a great time to be at the beach. Crowds are small, lines are non-existent, and temperatures are milder but still plenty warm.
The Virginia Beach KOA is in the flight path of the local Navy base. I liked the flight activity; it is what freedom sounds like. I imagine it would irritate some folks, but not me. The Virginia Beach KOA is very clean and maintained and is what you would expect. Spaces are a little tight, but not too bad.
The bike trail to the beach is accessed right across the road from the KOA entrance. We made use our RAD e-bike’s, and took the trail to the beach and rode up and down the boardwalk. The KOA is in a very convenient location with close access to the beach, shopping, and plenty of restaurants.
After a very nice relaxing stay in Virginia Beach, we headed across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel over to the Delmarva Peninsula. We headed up highway 13, which is a fantastic road for RV travel, up to our next stop, Pokomoke River State Park, specifically Shad Landing. This park is in Maryland and caters mostly to fishing, but it had very good hiking as well. Pokomoke was not crowded at all and we stayed for two nights.
Continuing up the Delmarva, our next stop was the Delaware Seashore State Park. This has to be one of the best state park locations in the country for RV’ers. Easy walk from the campground, under the bridge, to the beach. The campground is just a short drive from Rehoboth Beach and the boardwalk. This was a great RV stop I can see us making another trip to Delaware.
We are doing a bit of a circle with this road trip and now headed west and north a little bit. We cut across Delaware and Maryland and crossed the Bay Bridge. That is a white knuckle drive pulling an RV across that bridge. We squirted around Baltimore and our next destination was Gettysburg PA. Civil War history is a magnet for us (really me), put Nerak is very understanding. We stayed two nights at the Gettysburg KOA. It is a compact KOA with tight spaces, but very clean and excellent facilities. I recommend everyone see Gettysburg. We went to the visitor center, did the driving tour, and also toured the battlefields on our RAD e-bikes. Had a really nice visit to the Gettysburg Eddie’s Restaurant in downtown and learned about Eddie Plank.
We left Gettysburg and headed down I-81 back toward home. Not quite a direct route, but we were in no hurry. Made one more stop at Devil’s Backbone Basecamp Brewpub. I am sure this second trip to DB will not be our last.
